Advanced Total Security

VIPRE Antivirus Premium includes all the features of our regular VIPRE software plus a 2-way firewall, malicious web filtering, ad blocking, antiphishing and more to provide you with total security protection.

Best of both worlds – high performance & low resource drain

For years people have been complaining that the biggest frustration with antivirus programs is bloat and high resource usage. VIPRE Antivirus Premium has been purposely created from scratch to run seamlessly without compromising system performance. Pay attention to your current system performance and then try replacing your existing antivirus with VIPRE Premium – we think you’ll find it’s like having a new and improved system!

Next-generation technology = powerful antivirus and antispyware engine

At VIPRE’s core is an antivirus and antispyware engine that merges the detection of all types of malware into a single efficient and powerful system. The new technology was developed exclusively by GFI, without building on older generation antivirus engines. VIPRE Premium uses next-generation technologies making it the future of antivirus programs.

Advanced anti-rootkit technology

VIPRE’s all-new anti-rootkit technology finds and disables malicious hidden processes, threats, modules, services, files, Alternate Data Streams (ADS), or registry keys that are preparing to invade your system. VIPRE’s FirstScan™ helps accomplish this by running at the system’s boot time. FirstScan bypasses the Windows operating system to directly scan certain locations of the hard drive for malware, removing infections where found.

Real-time monitoring with Active Protection™

VIPRE’s Active Protection™ delivers real-time monitoring and protection against malware threats by working inside the Windows kernel (the core of the operating system), monitoring for malware and stopping it before it has the opportunity to execute on your system.

Full protection against email-borne threats

Receive comprehensive protection against email viruses. VIPRE Premium Antivirus supports Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail; and support for any email program that uses POP3 and SMTP (Thunderbird, IncrediMail, Eudora, etc.).

What is VIPRE Premium?
VIPRE Premium is next-generation antivirus + antispyware all-in-one with an integrated firewall. We built a new, fast engine from the ground up that is guaranteed not to slow down your computer.

What if I have performance problems after installing?
If you are running another antivirus or security product with active protection enabled, DO NOT enable VIPRE’s Active Protection. Doing so may result in significant performance issues. Uninstall other antivirus products and firewalls before you install VIPRE Antivirus Premium.

Does VIPRE replace my current antivirus like AVG, Norton McAfee and Trend? Do I need to uninstall my old Antivirus software?
Yes, VIPRE replaces old antivirus products. Additionally, antispyware is integrated and VIPRE provides full anti-malware protection against all malware like rootkits, trojans, bots and more malicious code.

We highly recommend you remove any other antivirus product from your PC prior to installing VIPRE. The reason for this is that “driver level” software used in antivirus engines tend to conflict with one another resulting in either a tremendously slow system and/or other problems.

Isn’t it VIPER and you made a typo?
No, it stands for Virus Intrusion Protection Remediation Engine.

If I have 10 PCs at home will ALL of them be covered by your Home Site license?
Yes!

How can I be sure that VIPRE will protect my computer against threats?
Good question. VIPRE has been antivirus certified by West Coast Labs, after successfully detecting, cleaning and/or blocking a set of viruses from the ‘WildList’ which is a selection of existing prevalent viruses. PC Magazine also recently tested VIPRE and found it to be successful in remediating threats.

Is VIPRE V4 (the regular one, not Premium) playing nice with firewalls like ZoneAlarm, Comodo and others?
In some cases, the HIPS driver in VIPRE Version 4 regular can conflict with the HIPS drivers of other firewalls. In this case, use this small utility than can disable the VIPRE V4 hips driver for you:

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/support/SPF/spfhips.exe

Or you can use the following command:

sc config sbhips start= disabled

then restart the computer.

If you run into any trouble, please let Support know and they’ll be happy to help you.

I want to use VIPRE together with the Sunbelt Personal Firewall (SPF), can I do that with Premium?
No. SPF has been discontinued and every customer on a current maintenance plan for SPF will receive a free upgrade to VIPRE Premium.

Can I run VIPRE on my 64-bit XP and/or Vista?
Yes, VIPRE runs successfully on all x64 Windows operating systems XP SP1 and newer, and will protect these systems. Additional 64-bit functionality that will come in the near future is scanning 64-bit processes or functionality for a Rootkit scan.

When I download a file, is VIPRE checking it for a virus? I’m not sure if VIPRE does this or not.
Yes, VIPRE’s Active Protection does indeed look at the file as it is being downloaded. VIPRE will compare the file to its definitions and the list of known bad programs. Actual scanning of the file won’t happen until a system scan is run. This two-step process keeps you safe without interfering with download speeds.

VIPRE is giving me a whole bunch of Allow/Disallow warnings. Why?
You probably have VIPRE running with Active Protection on HIGH. This causes a lot of warnings. HIGH is not recommended as it results in many popup dialogs, change it to ‘Simple Mode’ to reduce the popups.

How can I switch between Simple Mode and Learning Mode?
In Firewall Settings, at the bottom of the page, click “Reset to Defaults.” A pop-up will appear giving you the option to choose between Simple or Learning Mode.

Can the pop-up balloons be turned off in VIPRE?
Yes, if you right-click on the VIPRE icon in the lower right corner of the screen, a little menu opens. One of the selections is “Show Balloons”. If this option has a check mark in front of it, a balloon (small message) appears when VIPRE does something. Selecting “Show Balloons” will uncheck this feature and the pop-ups will no longer appear.

I added a wireless network at an Internet cafe’ as a Trusted Network, but I don’t want it to be trusted, what do I do?
Open Firewall Settings, click on Zones. In the Trusted Networks & Zones tab, you’ll see the network entered. Select the network, then click “Move to Untrusted.” This also works in reverse–if you incorrectly decide to make a Network Untrusted, click on the Untrusted Networks tab, highlight the network in question, then click “Move to Trusted.”

What happens if I accidentally delete my network in the Trusted Networks & Zones tab?
The next time traffic goes across that network when the Firewall is enabled, you will be prompted to add it. Simply choose to add it as a Trusted Zone.

I’m trying to navigate to a website and it looks odd, the graphics aren’t displaying – why would that happen?
The website is probably using Java Scripts, VB Scripts, or Active X controls and these are blocked in the Web Filter Settings. Open Firewall Settings, click on Web Filter Settings, and uncheck which ever one is causing the problem. You may have to experiment by unchecking one of the three, click Apply, then Refresh your browser. Try each one in turn until you can see your website. In rare cases, you will need to uncheck more than one to get it to display properly.

You can also add that specific website to the Allowed Web Sites list. In Web Filter Settings, click on the Allowed Web Sites tab, and click Add. If you don’t check any boxes, it will always be allowed through. You may want to only “uncheck” the one feature that’s causing the problem. Whatever you select applies to the entered website only.

I see that only High Priority Intrusions are blocked as the default. When should I block Medium and Low Priority Intrusions?
The average user normally won’t check these, as they are very restrictive security features and can block good applications from performing normal operations. A safe compromise is to set them to Block with Notify or Allow with Notify. With an alert is raised, you can see what just occurred and decide if you want to allow or prevent that activity.

I’m trying to play on online game, but VIPRE is blocking me. The directions say to Open a Port. How do I do that?
Open Firewall Settings and click on Exceptions. Click on the Port tab, then click Add. Enter your port, then the program filename (with the extension), and the port number. If the directions specify the protocol, select that, otherwise leave this field blank. Select the action and direction (Allow, both), then click OK.

What’s the “Add Advanced…” button in the Ports tab for?
This is the advanced version of adding a port exception. You can add very specific exceptions, crafted to allow or block very specific activity. If you’re unsure of what each of the fields is for, or how to add the right info, you should use the “Add” button in the Port tab.

I get “Ad blocked by VIPRE” when navigating to a website. What do I do?
Reason: You simply may have “Block 3rd party advertisements” enabled in Web Filter Settings. Some companies have their entire content provided by a 3rd party company, and VIPRE is recognizing the source as an advertisement.

Resolution: There are three ways to fix this: first is to disable “Block 3rd party advertisements.” The next two take more work.

Both require you to go to Firewall History (in the Firewall tab page).

First, make sure that “Log when connections are blocked” is checked in Web Filter Settings. If it’s not, you’ll have to check it and re-navigate to your website to record the info in Firewall History.

Click on the Webfilter tab and look for the URL that was blocked, or the text string that was blocked. Write down the URL. (You can also go to Details, highlight the referenced URL and copy to clipboard). Only write or copy the main portion of the URL, you don’t need the category=xxxx or page=yyyy parameters, for example.

In Web Filter Settings, in the Advertisements section, click on the Change button. This brings up a list of all the third party advertisers and sources and common text used in advertisement links. Click on Domain/URL to sort the data alphabetically, then scroll to find troublesome URL. Unchecking the Enabled box stops VIPRE from blocking data from that source.

If you can’t find the test string you’re looking for, click on the Allowed Web Sites tab in Web Filter Settings. Click “Add.” Type in or copy the URL string where indicated, make sure all the options are NOT checked, then click OK. “OK” your way out of the menus.

You should now be able to navigate to your page. In a future release, we’re going to make this a lot easier!

Will VIPRE protect me against malicious traffic in Instant Messenger (IM)?
Any links or files coming in through instant messenger programs will be evaluated by VIPRE’s Active Protection when they are either saved to disk or opened in a browser.

Can I EXCLUDE a hard drive that I do not want scanned by VIPRE?
Yes. In the Always Allowed list, click add an entire folder, then select the hard drive.

Does VIPRE Premium have a 64-bit firewall?
Yes. The firewall has both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers and works on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The correct driver loads based on the OS.
